US Airways Chairman’s Preferred Status Without Flying

Why fly or do mileage runs when you can get instant elite status when you apply for two US Airways cards?

You get 50,000 US Airways miles after your first purchase and payment of the $89 annual fee with the US Airways card.

To earn Chairman’s Preferred status you need 100,000 miles.

“Two US Airways cards gets you 100,000 miles and instant Chairman’s Preferred Status.

So you can fly in First Class all the time.”

Or so the flight attendant on my US Airways flight last week thought.

This was her pitch to the passengers as she peddled the US Airways card applications throughout the plane.

I loved her enthusiasm for her job and her encouragement of getting people 50,000 free US Airways miles.

But she was grossly mistaken and inadvertently misleading people about the benefits of the US Airways card.

To clarify:  you can not get Chairman’s Preferred status by applying for the US Airways card.

You have to fly 100,000 miles or 120 segments to get elite status with US Airways and American Airlines.

So if you don’t fly for work, you’ll have to keep mileage running on cheap flights to earn status because only butt in seat miles count towards status.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is the best card to get started in the world of miles and points. It is the first card you should get to start traveling for free because the welcome offer is 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months.

My favorite perks about this card are earning 5X points on travel when booked through the Chase portal (2X if direct purchase), 3X points on dining, $50 yearly credit on hotels booked through the Chase portal, no foreign transaction fees, and transferring points to 13 airline and hotel partners like Hyatt, United, and Southwest.

Chase Freedom Unlimited®

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of my favorite cards for earning cash back card and travel rewards. It offers a welcome offer of an additional 1.5% cash back on all your purchases up to $20,000 your first year.

My favorite perks about this card are earning 5% cash back on travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal, 3% cash back at drugstores and restaurants (including delivery and takeout), 1.5% cash back on all other purchases and no annual fee. When paired with cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card or Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, you can use your points to travel for free.
