Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport

This is the first installment in the series titled BlogHer'12 and Back.  This post includes a hotel review: Hampton Inn New York - LaGuardia Airport.

Although American Airlines offers an nonstop flight from San Diego to JFK, I flew a connection into La Guardia because it's closer to Manhattan, where BlogHer'12 was being held.

Flying in early for BlogHer'12 I stayed at the Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport for the first night for several reasons:

  • the hotel is a Hilton property so I would get a night stay credit
  • as a Hilton HHonors Gold member I would get 250 Hilton HHonors bonus points
  • the hotel was participating in Hilton's Three Your Trip promotion
  • complimentary in room high speed internet
  • complimentary use of the Business Center
  • complimentary shuttle from La Guardia to the hotel
  • complimentary shuttle from the hotel to the train
  • complimentary hot breakfast

Due to weather at La Guardia, my flight arrived two hours later than planned. Thankfully, I had prepaid my reservation as multiple flight cancellations caused stranded passengers to quickly snap up any and all available hotel rooms.

Location:

La Guardia Airport and the train are both about 5 minutes away by car.

Despite the proximity to the airport and freeway, outside noise was nonexistent.

Airport Shuttle:

The shuttle begins at 4am from the hotel and run on a schedule.  Drivers are courteous, friendly, and helpful.

Pickups from the airport are on the arrival level vs departure level.

Accommodations:

View of La Guardia airport from Hampton Inn La Guardia
View from the 8th floor.

The view from my left window was of the airport while the view from the right window was of the parking garage and surrounding neighborhood.  Both view were completely fine since I did not book this hotel for the view.

Hampton Inn La Guardia alternate view work area
Easy chair, ottoman, and work area

The room was decent sized; I had more than enough room for my suitcases without feeling cramped.

The bed. OMG. Imagine your body being cushioned in comfort, sinking into a pile of soft sheets and bed linens, yet with enough back support so you don't end up walking like a hunchback the next day.

The bed at the Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport hotel was like that.  I did not want to get out of bed. I was tempted to push the limits of late checkout, but I had things to do and people to see.

Hampton Inn La Guardia airport room bathroom
Clean, functional bathroom

Despite the coffee maker in the bathroom, there is plenty of counter and under counter room to stash your toiletries.

I think it's tacky to put the coffee maker in the bathroom when you have a large room with plenty of horizontal surfaces upon which to place a coffee maker.  It could have been placed on the second dresser next to the ice bucket.

I guess when you're taking your morning constitutional you might want a cup of Joe to go with it?

Hampton Inn La Guardia airport room shower
Shower only, no tub 🙁

I was also disappointed to discover only a shower and no tub.

Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport under door gap
1 inch gap under door

Another disconcerting feature was the 1-inch gap under the room door.  Just how big of a folio are they going to slip under the door? It's not like a cruise ship where the bar bill might be six pages long...

Amenities:

Complimentary use of the Business Center computers and printer.  The Business Center had three computers, each with it's own desk and phone.

The pool and fitness center are also complimentary.  The fitness had the usual assortment of free weights and treadmills.

Food:

Although the Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport provides a hot breakfast, it does not have a restaurant on the premises.  You can get take-out menus from several local restaurants with free delivery to the hotel from the front desk.

If you're determined to have hotel restaurant food, you can walk to the Marriott next door or the Crowne Plaza down the street and eat at their restaurants.

Hot Breakfast:

Hampton Inn La Guardia breakfast sandwich
Pre-made breakfast quesdillas
Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport french toast and sausages
Pre-made french toast and sausages

The complimentary hot breakfast consisted of pre-made quesadillas, french toast, sausages, oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, bagels, muffins, and fruit.  A make your own waffle station is available.

 Summary:

Despite the lack of a tub and the large gap under my door, I would stay at the Hampton Inn La Guardia Airport hotel again.  The incredibly comfortable bed alone wins my vote.
