Why I Decided To Become A Glasshole

I caught the Google Glass bug at TBEX Toronto when Trey Ratcliff showed up on stage sporting his Google Glasses.

I was hooked.  The only thoughts running through my head were, "Want Google Glass. Need Google Glass."

I, along with 500+ travel bloggers, immediately Googled Google Glass, only to learn that the Google Explorer program was closed.

Shut down before we even got started.

But I was not to be deterred. I wanted Google Glass.  One day Glass would be mine.

So I patiently waited.

The LA Times reported that Google was inviting more Explorers.

I wasted no time and applied immediately, but without much hope, because I'm not famous, my blog doesn't have a zillion readers, and I'm kinda shy.

But fortune favors the brave and Google invited me to be an Explorer 13 days later, and two days before Thanksgiving.

I could not contain my excitement, I was like a kid let loose in a candy store.  It was like Christmas, my birthday, and winning the lottery (or as I'd imagine how winning the lottery feels since I haven't won the lottery.  I heard your chances of winning increase if you actually play the lottery...)

But I struggled. I wanted Glass, but did I want the $1,500 price tag?

I'm cheap.  I hate spending money.  But I love technology (and travel). And the prospect of being able to talk photos without having to dig my phone or camera out of my bag is a big draw.

The translate app would come in handy while traveling.  No more having to ask for directions.

But $1,500 is a lot of cash on something that might later be priced at $300.

And I'm at the age where I need to hold things at arm's length to see better. With a display only an inch from my eye, would I be able to read it?

I spent the next five days researching Glass, reading other reviews, trying to decide if I should become a glasshole.

Google has a 30 day return policy so there would be no real risk.

The pull of Glass was too strong. I could not resist.  I ordered Glass.

It arrived 2 days later, the morning I was leaving for a 3 day mileage run to China so no Glass for me.

I finally opened the box yesterday, a week later.  The clouds parted and a hallelujah chorus played.

I officially became a Glasshole.  Or is it official since I have yet to take a self gratuitous selfie in the mirror wearing Glass?

Stay tuned for the rest of my Google Glass adventures.

Have you heard about Google Glass? Are you interested in being an Explorer?
