A long flight in coach can be a miserable experience unless you know the tricks to having a more enjoyable flight.

What to bring to enjoy a long haul flight

These 7 items can make your long haul flight more comfortable.

1. Compression Socks

Keep those blood clots away with compression socks

I’m a big fan of compression socks.  I wish I would have started wearing them years ago.

You’ll feel more rested especially after a red-eye flight.  You decrease your changes of getting deep vein thrombosis aka blood clots, if you wear compression socks.

I wore my compression socks on a 13 1/2 hour red-eye flight to Dubai from the US.   I arrived relatively rested and energized despite staying awake the entire flight.

My favorite compression socks are the Sockwell Women’s Circulator Compression Socks with Black Stripeand the Sockwell Women’s Circulator Compression Socks in Natural. There are cuter designs if you want to be flashy.

They feel a little tight when you first put them on but the feeling goes away after a few minutes.

2. Eye Mask

Could also be labeled, “I don’t do crazy”

You usually get more sleep when you wear an eye mask because it blocks out the light.

I don’t like to be wasteful (aka I’m cheap) so I use the eye mask I got from an American Airlines amenity kit.

Nondescript American Airlines eye mask but it keeps the light out!

It’s several years old and the elastic is starting to give a little, but it works.

If you don’t have access to an airline amenity kit, you can buy an eye mask.

I’m thinking about getting the Flight001 Keep Nuts Away Eye Mask. It’s on sale right now from Amazon. And if you have Amazon Prime, you’ll get free 2-day shipping.

3. Blanket

Tuck yourself in or use as a pillow

It can get chilly on long flights, especially if you’re sitting next to the window or in the exit row.

Bring a blanket to keep you warm or use as a pillow.

I flew Swiss Air last month and they had the warmest lightweight blanket in coach.  The closest I could find is Victorinox Luggage Deluxe Travel Blanket.

Although I’m tempted to get the Skip Hop Zoo Travel Blanket, Owl, but it might be a wee bit small.

It might cover my arm…

4. Neck Pillow

I don’t use a neck pillow.  I probably should because I’m forever doing the head bob, like Beth…

I picked the TravelMate (R) Memory Foam Neck Pillow.

A place for your weary head

Seems like it would do the trick.  And it’s on sale at Amazon for $12.75.

5. Slippers

Going barefoot or shoeless on the plane is yucky.

A pair of slippers so you can take off your shoes is a godsend!

At home I wear my Qwaruba Flamingo slippersduring the summer and my UGGsduring the winter.

But on the plane, I bring a pair of disposable slippers, courtesy of whichever hotel I last stayed.

You get free slippers at:

  • Hilton hotels when staying in an Executive room or Suite and for Gold and Diamond elite members
  • Radisson hotels when staying in a Business room or Suite and for Gold and Concierge elite members
  • Sheraton hotels when staying in a Club room or Suite and for Platinum elite members
  • Hyatt hotels (You can also get toothpaste, combs, deodorant, Woolite, and other items.)
  • Peninsula hotels
  • Ritz-Carlton hotels
  • Fairmont hotels

If you won’t be staying in a hotel soon, this 6 pack of Spa Slippers(exactly like the pair I got from Hyatt) is $14.99 from Amazon.

Or you can make a fashion statment with the French Bull Ziggy Slippers, but they aren’t disposable.

6. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Enjoy a quiet flight

Why noise cancelling headphones?  Screaming babies, free range children and drunks on a plane, enough said.

I haven’t caved in and bought a set of noise cancelling headphones yet.  But I have my eye on the Bose QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones.

You can get extra miles and points if you shop through a shopping portal.  You get 3 American Airlines miles for every $1 you spend on Bose products from AAdvantage eshopping.

7. Foot Rest

Kick back and relax

When I fly on long flights my knees start hurting.  So I bought a Design Go Luggage Foot Restfor my 10 day, 25 flight mileage run.

But I didn’t use it and my knees survived.
