Can You Use Someone Else’s Amex Platinum RSVP Code?

Update: The credit card offer in this post is no longer available. Check our travel rewards card page for the latest offers.

You could get 100,000 American Express Membership Rewards points by spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of having your American Express Platinum card.

The normal welcome offer/bonus is 40,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. But not everyone gets approved for this lucrative offer.

So if you weren’t targeted, can you use someone else’s Amex Platinum 100,000 point offer?

How to Use Someone’s Amex RSVP Code

Every two months Amex sends 100,000 American Express Membership Rewards points offers for the personal Amex Express Platinum card to my kids. But they’ve never sent one to me.

The American Express Platinum was one card that I did not have and until recently didn’t really need. Yeah, yeah, airline benefit, blah, blah.

The $200 yearly airline benefit wasn’t enough enticement for me to pay the $450 annual fee. But with more Centurion Lounges and my Global Entry membership coming up for renewal, the steep annual fee would it.

But I wanted the 100,000 offer. And I still hadn’t been targeted…

So a few months ago when my kids got that familiar gray envelope in the mail with the “100,000 Membership Rewards points welcome offer” embossed across the front, I decided it was time for me to get the Amex Platinum card.

Call American Express

You used to be able to call and use someone else’s invite code. So I called Amex, explained that both my boys received the offer and would it be possible if I used their offer code.

Long story short. The answer was no. Despite calling back multiple times.

Each time the representative tried but couldn’t find the offer for me and said I couldn’t use either code. So that loophole is closed.

Please let me know if you’ve been successful recently using someone else’s personal offer code.

Apply Online

Because calling in didn’t work, I tried the other workaround: applying on the Amex Platinum website.

1.  Enter Invite Code

Enter the other person’s RSVP code and zip code. Then click the “Proceed” button.

Type in the invite code

2. Change the Name

You’ll be brought to the application page filled out with the other person’s information.

Delete their information, enter your details, and continue filling out the application.

And if all goes well, you’d be sitting pretty with a new Amex Platinum card and 100,000 points.

But that didn’t work for me. The fields were grayed out and uneditable.

So you can no longer change the name, date of birth, phone number, or social security number when using another person’s invite on the Amex website.

I’m guessing this changed when Amex went to the one welcome offer/bonus on a personal card in your lifetime rule.

Business Amex Platinum 100,000 Offer Code

But you may still be able to use their Business American Express Platinum invitation code. Because the change the name trick still works with targeted American Express business offers.

Frequent Miler’s wife was able to use her son’s 75,000 Amex Business Gold offer.  (Normally I’d link to the post but Boarding Area is having adware issues.)

So while my kids are authorized users on all my personal credit cards and are getting 100,000 offers every two months, they aren’t on my business cards.

Looks like I’ll need to add them to my business accounts. This way they’ll get a 100,000 American Express Platinum business card offer. And then I can apply for a second card with a 100,000 offer.

Conclusion

You can still use someone else’s Amex Platinum RSVP code.

But you can’t do it over the phone. It has to be done online. And you can only use someone else’s Amex Platinum business offer. Because you can no longer use personal invite codes. Possibly because you can only the welcome offer/bonus on personal cards once.

I’d love to hear any recent experiences of using someone’s personal RSVP code.  Have you been able to use someone else’s Amex Platinum 100,000 invite code recently?

Thanks to reader Chris for letting me know about this offer.

This whole post is full of wrong information. If you're the pro, I'd hate to see an ametuer.

Hi Arnold,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. What parts of the post are wrong?

This was based on my experience in July. Changing the name on a targeted AMEX Platinum offer for a personal card was no longer possible online nor would the representative allow me to use either of my kids offer codes.

If you've experienced differently recently, I'd love to hear about it. Feel free to send me screen shots via email.
