I got a lot of positive comments when I posted my Top 4 Things to do on Memorial Day which included a Memorial Day Zombie crawl.
This year, I’ve expanded my list by one and extended it through the Memorial Day weekend. Here are my top 5 things to do on Memorial Day Weekend.
This post is not intended to trivialize the men and women who gave all for our freedom. I am forever grateful and humbled by their sacrifice.
5 Fun Things to do Memorial Day Weekend
1. Vista Strawberry Festival
Where else can you find a 10k run, flash mob, pie eating contests, and concerts? No where except the annual Vista Strawberry Festival.
You can enjoy everything strawberry, from food eating contests to carnival rides, a beer garden (adults 21 years old and older), street vendors, and live music from 8 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on May 25.
The 10k run begins at 7:05 a.m.
Tickets to the Juice Newton concert at 7:30 p.m. on May 24, 2014, can be purchased online.
2. National Chardonnay Day
You can celebrate National Chardonnay Day with “California’s First Family of Chardonnay,” Wente Vineyards on May 22.
It’s technically not on Memorial Weekend, but it’s close enough.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a Chardonnay Reception and culminate with dinner at The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards.
You can also enjoy Chardonnay tasting flights samples for the rest of the month at The Estate Winery & Tasting Room, The Vineyard Tasting Room, and The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards (ends on May 24).
If you can’t make it to the Livermore Valley, you and participate in the live toast on May 22 at 6 p.m. PDT.

3. Denver Day of Rock
The 6th annual Denver Day of Rock is a rocking day of free concerts.
You can enjoy live concerts on five stages in the 16th Street pedestrian mall from 2:30-9:30 p.m.on May 24, 2014.
Special performances by the Congress and the Wallflowers will be held in Skyline Park starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23.
Performers include The Railbenders, Strange Americans, The Kin, and Black Joe Lewis. You can find the complete lineup here.
4. “World’s Smallest” Air Show
You can watch the “World’s Smallest” Air show at Brian Ranch Airport (between Palmdale and Hesperia off Highway 138) on May 24, 2014 to May 25, 2014.
The free air show featuring ultralights will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Aircraft displays will be on hand for viewing. Visitors can enjoy a rocket demonstration and sky divers.
5. Wool Days
If you’re in the Central Massachusetts area, head out to Old Sturbridge Village for Wool Days. You can watch sheep getting sheared and learn about how wool is made into yarn. You can even try hand-carding the wool.
It’s a fun weekend of activities for the entire family, May 24, 2014 to May 26, 2014:
- Watch border collie herding
- Knit or crochet scarves for deployed soldiers
- Dye your own yarn or make felted jewelry at the Craft Center (a fee applies)
- Meet alpacas, llamas, lambs, chickens, cows, and oexen
- Watch spinning wheel and loom demonstrations
- Watch musket firing, hearth cooking, printing, coopering, blacksmithing, shoe-making and launching toy hot air balloons
