Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best card for beginning travel hackers. It is the first card you should get to start traveling for free because the welcome offer is 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first three months).

My favorite perks about this card are earning 2X points on travel and dining, no foreign transaction fees, and transferring points to 13 airline and hotel partners like Hyatt, United, and Southwest.

It seems to me that, as a rule, the less-expensive brands in a hotel group tend to be the ones that include free wi-fi and breakfasts. The pricier brands seem to nickel-and-dime their guests for every little thing. Is it my imagination or have you found that as well?

    • Debra Schroeder February 9, 2016 at 10:42 pm

      Hi Linda Bibb,

Nope, you’re correct. The budget hotels offer the most free benefits for all guests. While the higher end hotels reserve those benefits for their top tier loyalty program members.

It’s because the less expensive hotels have to compete for customers and give something more. Whereas the more expensive hotels don’t.

Totally agree, as a travel blogger, free internet in a hotel, especially when you’re working with them, is an absolute must. Pinned this to one of my favourite travel tips boards

As a freelancer and a travel blogger, internet is very important. It is something I check before booking. Some only offer in the lobby that’s good but also nice if you can work from your own room. Thanks for listing all these down.

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:35 pm

      Hi Karla | karlaroundtheworld,

I prefer working in my room, too vs the lobby. Glad you found the post helpful. 🙂

  • Traveling Rockhopper March 6, 2016 at 12:02 am

Thanks for this useful tips! I wasn’t aware of this, however sometimes I don’t mind not to have internet 😉

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:36 pm

      Hi Traveling Rockhopper,

You’re welcome. LOL, yeah, sometimes it’s nice to disconnect every once in awhile.

  • Jenna March 6, 2016 at 12:56 am

Thanks for the tips and the helpful breakdown! Free internet is always a top priority for us since we work on the road. It always makes me so frustrated when we end up at a place that doesn’t have free wifi!

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:37 pm

      Hi Jenna,

You’re welcome! It can be really frustrating when you need to work and there isn’t free Wi-Fi. Or when it’s not working.

  • Meg Jerrard March 6, 2016 at 4:37 am

Through my travels I’ve found the same as Linda, that the budget hotels seem to offer the most free benefits and it’s the luxury hotels and chains that hit you up. Though we’ve caught on to signing up for their free loyalty programs which gets us free WiFi in the majority of them. Free internet is one of the make or break amenities that influences my decision over whether or not to book a hotel. Thanks for the list!

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:38 pm

      Hi Meg Jerrard,

So true. The budget hotels give you everything: free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, free parking, etc. But the luxury hotels make you pay for it.

Glad you caught on to sign up for the hotel loyalty programs. 🙂

  • Tess Andrade March 6, 2016 at 5:45 am

What awesome advice – will pin this right away. Invaluable for us bloggers! I’m an IHG member and knew I could get free WI-FI at those hotels but didn’t know about the rest.

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:40 pm

      Hi Tess Andrade,

Thanks for the compliment and pinning this post. 🙂

  • Laura March 6, 2016 at 10:04 am

That covers a lot of the big hotel chains. It shouldn’t be difficult to find a place that offers free wi-fi then. I don’t really see why hotels make you pay for it still. It should be a basic inclusion.

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:41 pm

      Hi Laura,

I totally agree. Wi-Fi should be like TV, included without any extra fees.

  • Megan March 6, 2016 at 4:12 pm

Some great tips! I’ll have to save this to look back when I’m staying at different hotel chains. I’ve found signing up for rewards programs works for a lot of hotels. Happy to give my email for continual free internet.

  • melody pittman March 6, 2016 at 4:45 pm

Nice to see all the hotels listed with information about them but personally I would not ever even entertain the idea of staying somewhere without free WIFI. I liked the structure of this post a lot.

    • Debra Schroeder March 6, 2016 at 4:47 pm

      Hi melody pittman,

I’m right there with you. Free Wi-Fi is essential.

      Thanks for the compliment. 🙂

  • Jennifer Melroy March 6, 2016 at 7:43 pm

I try not to stay at places that don’t have free internet. It annoys me that the more expensive the hotel the more likely it is to charge for internet. Hilton is a prime example of this (hence why I don’t stay there if I can help it).

    • Debra Schroeder March 7, 2016 at 6:03 am

      Hi Jennifer Melroy,

It is pretty annoying. Now Hilton gives you free Wi-Fi when you’re a member of their loyalty program and book through them.

  • Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle February 7, 2017 at 4:31 am

Thank you SO MUCH! As a blogger, Wi-Fi is absolutely required when I travel, but sometimes it’s so expensive I have to wonder if it’s worth it. I really appreciate this.

  • Jenn February 7, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Free wifi is a must for me especially when I travel. This is great to know there are so many hotel that offer it. Thanks for the list

  • My Teen Guide February 8, 2017 at 5:09 am

I also don’t want to stay in the lobby for free wi-fi. Budget hotel are best in this area, free wi-fi inside the room is available.

  • Melissa Dixon February 8, 2017 at 7:34 am

I feel like the whole world should have free wi-fi these days. It’s like air to most of us, we live on our devices.

  • The Cubicle Chick February 8, 2017 at 11:29 am

Thank you for sharing. Hilton Brands are my favorite as I always get free wi-fi with them. I will definitely bookmark. – yolonda

  • Shaney Maharaj February 10, 2017 at 9:17 am

My husband is a member of the Hilton club! We absolutely love it. You actually get some awesome perks including wifi. 😉
