For a limited time, Southwest is offering a mystery bonus promotion when you buy points. You get up to a 50% bonus on Southwest points through November 10, 2017.

Unlike other promotions, the exact amount of your bonus will be a mystery but up to 50% off. You have to use the link and log into your Southwest account to see your mystery bonus. To get the bonus you have to buy at least 5,000 points.

You can buy up to 60,000 points per day. Yes, you read that right…you can purchase 60,000 Southwest points per day.

Points post in 72 hours. So make sure you buy points 3 days before you need to use them.

Pro-tip: Purchased points do not count towards the Southwest Companion Pass, A-List Preferred, or A-List status.

Should You Buy Points?

Not sure if you should buy points? I’ve written about the only time you should buy airline miles.

Southwest points normally cost 2.75 cents per point. With this promotion, you can buy points for as low as 1.38 cents per point.

So if you got the 50% off mystery bonus this is a good deal. Especially now that Southwest will start flying to Hawaii.

Holiday Travel

Buying points can save you money on holiday travel. Because airfare is more expensive during the holidays. Purchasing points and using them for free flights can be cheaper than paying cash for an airline ticket.

San Diego to New York

A paid ticket from San Diego to New York costs $306.17

For example, buying a round-trip from San Diego to New York will cost $306.17.

Flying from San Diego to New York costs 16,904 points

You can book the same flight for 16,904 points. Buying 17,000 points (because you have to buy in 1,000 increments) costs $234.60. If you get up to a 50% bonus on Southwest points during the mystery promo.

So you’d save $71.57 buying points instead of buying a ticket. And you can use your Southwest Companion Pass and have someone fly with you for free!

Boston to Fort Lauderdale

A ticket from Boston to Fort Lauderdale costs $174.95

You’d pay $174.95 for a round-trip ticket from Boston to Fort Lauderdale.

It’s cheaper to book your flight with points

Or you can use 9,268 points. Buying 10,000 points cost$138. You’d save $36.95 buying points and using those for your flight instead of paying cash.

New York to San Diego

Paying for a ticket costs $340.57

Buying a round-trip ticket from New York to San Diego costs $340.57.

The same flight costs 19,784 points. You can buy 20,000 points for $276.

You’ll save $64.57 when you buy Southwest points. Then use those points to book your flight.

Pro-tip: You can cancel a Southwest flight without penalty or cancellation fees. If you cancel at least 10 minutes before the flight.

Conclusion

You can get up to a 50% bonus on Southwest points when you buy points by November 10, 2017.

There’s a 5,000 point minimum to get the bonus. But you can buy 60,000 points per day.

This is a great way to save money on tickets during the holidays. Because it can be cheaper to buy points and redeem for a flight instead of paying cash for your airline ticket.
