Southwest 50,000 Point Sign-up Credit Card Offer is Back Traveling Well For Less

15 minutes of your time for 2 round-trip flights, is definitely worth it

Southwest 50,000 point sign-up credit card offer is back

There are 3 Southwest credit cards and each is offering 50,000 points after you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months.

  • Southwest Premier personal card
  • Southwest Plus personal card
  • Southwest Plus business card

Free travel for 2 years

The 50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus counts towards the 110,000 points you need for the Southwest
Companion Pass.

So, two Southwest credit cards (one personal and one business) plus 10,000 Southwest points will earn you a Southwest Companion Pass. With the Southwest Companion Pass your companion can fly free for up to two years.

You can travel sooner than you think

If you get two Southwest credit cards and make the $1,000 (Plus cards) or $2,000 (Premier cards) minimum spending on each card, you’ll have 104,000 points (50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus x 2 Premier cards + $2,000 minimum spend x 2) or 102,000 points (50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus x 2 Plus cards + $1,000 minimum spend x 2).

You can get the extra 6,000 or 8,000 Southwest points by:

  • Transferring Wyndham hotel points
  • Transferring Choice hotel points
  • Transferring Hyatt hotel points
  • Transferring Marriott hotel points

You can buy Wyndham and Choice hotel points for cheap during week 1 of the Daily Getaways.

Wyndham points transfer in increments of 6,000 points, so 6,000 Wyndham points gets you 1,200 Southwest points.  You can buy 32,000 Wyndham points for $192.  You can transfer 30,000 Wyndham points to 6,000 Southwest points.  You can buy 40,000 Wyndham points for $240 and transfer 36,000 Wyndham points to 7,200 Southwest points.

But there’s a cheaper way!

Choice points also transfer in 6,000 point increments.  But for every 6,000 Choice points you get 1,800 Southwest points.

Meaning you can buy 20,000 Choice points for only $108.  After transferring 18,000 Choice points you’ll have 5,400 Southwest points.  You can also buy 36,000 Choice points for $195 and transfer all 36,000 Choice points to 9,000 Southwest points.

Things to remember

1) Differences between the Premier and Plus cards

Both the Premier and the Plus cards have the same 50,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus.  But there are some slight differences between the Southwest Premier and Southwest Plus cards.

Southwest Premier personal and business cards:

  • $2,000 minimum spending requirement
  • 6,000 Southwest points every year when you renew your card
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $99 annual fee

Southwest Plus personal and business cards:

  • $2,000 minimum spending requirement
  • 4,000 Southwest points every year when you renew your card
  • 3% foreign transaction fees
  • $69 annual fee

2)  Get one personal and one business card

You should apply for one personal Southwest card and one business Southwest card because you can’t get two personal Chase cards at the same time.

To make it easier to remember, you could apply for both versions of the same card:

  • The Southwest Premier personal and business card
  • The Southwest Plus personal and business card

But I prefer having one of each, one Premier card and one Plus card.  This way I always have a card that has no foreign transaction fees.
