Sunday Someday: Appalachian Trail

This week's Sunday Someday is the Appalachian Trail.
The Sunday Someday weekly series features photos of bucket list destinations.
The image is of the Catawba Valley from the McAfee Knob overlook.
I'd love to be able to hike the entire trail but given the time commitment I'd have to do it in sections.
Have you hiked the Appalachian Trail?

I thru hiked the entire trail over 10 years ago.
Perhaps once I retire i can do it again.
You can find me on FT or FW (BenH) if you have any questions about it.
Hey BenH,
Yeah, I think I'll have to wait until I retire as well to hike the entire trail nonstop.
Do you remember how long it took you? Did you go North to South or vice versa? (I'll send you a PM on FT in case you don't get these questions.)
Thanks 🙂
6 months. Started just after Easter in Georgia, finished mid-October in Maine (South > North - the most common way). I took my time, 6 months is average to above average for a true white-blaze hiker who is carrying a full load (not an ultra light hiker of jogger with support system). I could have shaved off at least 2 weeks if I hustled a bit more (took off 3 days here, 4 days there at certain locations...). I think if you aim for less than 5 months you are starting loose many of the experiences you will have along the way. At a maximum you maybe have 6.5 - 7 months if you are really slow... if you start too early it is pretty darn cold at nights (even down South) and the summit peak in Maine can close down by the end of October due to extreme weather.
Great tips, thanks Ben! I like the take your time approach, otherwise, as you said, you miss out.
